Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan at A Southern Daydreamer. Thanks Susan for helping us share what is happening in "our world".Before I begin this week's post, I want to mention my Bluebird Blunder. Click here to learn more. I tried to post the correction when I found my mistake but I could no longer post to Outdoor Wednesday. So, hopefully, I have made my amends.
Now, to the task at hand. Our landscape bed as you walk up our walk was badly, and I do mean badly, in need of a re-do.
Shrubs that had long ago outlived their beauty needed to be removed. Two year old mulch looked like crumbled gray concrete. Several plants had been removed because they were no longer green, just basic brown. YUCK!
First it was off the our local Wal-Mart for mulch.
Next that old overgrown juniper and other expired plants had to be removed. This was not an easy feat especially for me. HD dug and dug and dug in the dirt. He was a dog-gone good dirt digger. (Try to say that eight times!) Our soil, even though it has been amended, is filled with rocks. You never know when you will encounter one while trying to plant.
Once the old juniper was removed, our well was revealed. The well cap of our deep well was not put in the designated spot when we built almost 30 years ago. For years it has been covered by the shrubbery. Now it was out in the open for everyone to view. It stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb.

So, I spray painted it brown! Ole! (You can see it in one of the last pictures. Well, hopefully, you can't see it.)

Now to some of the plants we added to our bed. We purchased them at Lowe's because they have a one-year guarantee and their selection is just terrific. This is a Soft Touch Holly. It is low growing evergreen.

Other additions were Sunny Knock-Out Roses. Their sweet yellow buds have already found a place on my kitchen window sill. They have a delightful smell and we are really looking forward to them all summer.
This is a Purpleleaf Sand Cherry. One is still covered with pink and white blooms but this one had finished it's spring show.
I wanted an accent that tied to our shutters and brick. What do you think? We just love it!We also added Rose Glow Barberry, Procumbens Nana Juniper, and Wintergreen Boxwood to our creation. We retained three of our previous shrubs and added fourteen new ones.
This is a view from the bed to our back yard. This dogwood has been explosive this spring. It is even more lovely today than when I took this picture. It was a gift from my students about 15 years ago. I enjoy it every spring as a reminder of my years in education.
Here she is in all her glory! I know. I know. The planters are not filled but I always do my perennials for Mother's Day. (My gift to me!) Looking across our driveway you can see another dogwood. This one HD brought from the woods on our farm about 25 years ago. Some people say that you can't transplant dogwood from the woods but I beg to differ. This one has flourished.
Thank you for viewing my blog and be sure to leave a comment.
Have a wonderful week.
Charla

What a gorgeous view you have.
How fun for me to see some Missourah spring! Brad's folks have transplanted a dozen dogwood from their woods to the yard over the years and they're beautiful like yours.
My knockout roses are exploding with blooms. I have three vases chock full of red double knockouts and pink knockouts that T.C. and I picked after our walk this morning :)
God bless you, Cousin Charla!
Hi Charla
I didn't know about the yellow knockouts. I think we might need to find a place for one.
We planted Home Run roses, last year. They are deep red and have the same characteristics of knockouts.
Your landscaping is looking wonderful!
What a beautiful yard! I have someof those same plants from Lowes. I need to work in my flower beds so bad but they will have to just wait their turn. Thanks for sharing your pretty yard and giving me the bug to do mine...smile. Great idea too about that well cover. Didnt even see it...hehe~
You have such a beautiful space to work with! I think your renovated shrub bed is an excellent change - right down to the camouflaged well cover!
Love those knock out roses -- I'm going to have to check them out.
Great --- thanks for sharing!
Cass
Hi Charla, Thank you for visiting me.
Your landscaping looks great.
Kathleen
What a wonderful space you have to work with. Your hard work will pay off in no time.
The bed looks great. How clever to paint the well cap brown and what a lovely idea your students had to give you a dogwood. Lovely!
Looks gorgeous and yey! dirt diggin' Harry! It's time for me to get goin' on my little garden spot! Maybe I'll get me one of those Knock roses...or whatever they are. They must be beautiful. Right now I've got zinnias on the brain. My holly hocks are comin' up, and the neighbor's pink dogwood is so big that it looks like it's ours! Now if we can just catch the mole that's creating a cavern in our front yard, we'll be in business!! love you! gina
OMG!! Seeing that landscaping makes me realize that is something that my hubby and I need to do. Thanks for kind words on my blog. Happy OW!
It looks like you have a lovely place! Great help too ;)
Hi Charla! Oh, what prettiness at your home! I'll bet his muscles were sore!

Hi Charla! What an amazing transformation you are making of that bed. How smart of you to think of picking up the shutter colors with the barberries. I can't wait to see it after you get some flowers in there.
What a fantastic job you're doing. It's looking great!
I enjoyed your garden post. I have planeted 5 of those yellow knock out roses this year and put down 100 bags of mulch and I am not done yet. I also added 10 english boxwoods this year. This is the time of year I never have enough money...I also want to say that I loved your color story ! It was so much fun to read. Thank you. vicky
Everything looks beautiful...
especially that dogwood! And I love that you just spray painted that well cover. GENIUS!
How smart are you - spray painting the well cap brown, and all? It's a good thing you chose teaching as your profession!
Thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving me such a great comment.
It's nice to meet new blogging friends.

Isn't is great to get outside and see all the beautiful flowers and greenery now? You've done a great job. Thanks for coming by and visiting my blog. Come by anytime. Debbie
wasn't that blue awful...those two gals were trying to get me on the blue wagan...so I gave in...hahhaha
Curb appeal is right! Your bed looks great. That armillary sphere is wonderful too.
Hi Charla~
What a lovely flower bed. That knock out rose is a beautiful color. I have seen it before. Certainly a lot of work and digging, but what a great job.
Thanks for stopping by, it was nice to meet you.
Donna
What a beautiful job. I was laughing when I saw that you painted your well cap brown (queen of spray paint here). Right after I saw your well cap I thought, "I could paint that to look like a ladybug"! Of course, I'm one with my grandma's bowling ball painted orange in my landscaping!. Purple sand cherry is one of my favorites! And this might sound sick, it's a favorite because I can prune it at least once a year, chop chop!
Hi Charla, your pictures are wonderful...there's nothing like starting and planting new flower beds for spring.
Happy Outdoor Wednesday.
Barb
What a pretty yard you have! Boy I would have been sore the next day if I'd tried to do all of that digging! Thank you for popping in to see Stella and me!

Hi Charla, Your curb area turned out very nice. It is hard work, but isn't it rewarding!
So glad you visited my blog since it brought me to yours. The passage on your side bar is one of my very favorite verses and the song you have chosen to go with it is so appropriate.

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.

Great idea! I'm totally forgot about the watermelon or honeydew, I guess it works too, just need to clean up the dying plants after season and making sure the leaves won't get into the pool.

That sure was really hardwork. I have tried to do that in our outer space but I can't picture out what I want to do with it. So I guess the professional will handle that for me. :)
