Welcome to a New Kitchen

Welcome to Metamorphosis Monday with Susan at http://betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com/. Be sure to look at other great changes on her blog.

I printed "Take Time..." and put it in the little black frame. Of course that ties to the name of this blog but also to what was about to happen in our condo kitchen.

Our lake condo kitchen was in need of a change - or - more than that - changes!

I tried to show that kitchen a little love but it was no help. It still looked like the 80's. The former owners had painted the cabinets and except for a few small "boo-boos" they looked great. But it was still that wallpaper.

I even hung a welcome sign. But, I did not feel welcome in that kitchen.

The only solution was to relieved it of its wallpaper. And that my blogging friends, was not an easy task.

These were tools everyone told me to use to make it an easy task! Wrong! I used a commercial product guaranteed to remove the the most stubborn wall covering. It did not come off. I used a tool to score that paper along with the product. It did not come off. I used hot, hot water and a putty knife. It did not come off. I used vinegar in the hot, hot water with the putty knife. Well, you know the story. The same thing happened with fabric softener. I even tried a clothes steamer. Not to be!

This was after the first day. The paper literally came off in pieces the size of postage stamps. At this point, there was no turning back. Honestly, I just wanted to jump off the deck but I don't swim and I hated to leave a job half done.

Another resident at the condo stages homes in addition to doing a variety of wall finishes. She most graciously said, after seeing the panic on my face, that she would show me how to remedy the situation. Jump for Joy!

I removed the top layer of wallpaper in the rest of the kitchen. She suggested that I purchase a gallon of drywall mud, Kilz to seal it, and paint for the wall. Now we were talking. Paint- that was what I was talking about.

Now mind you, I am not the most talented, but after watching her smear that mud on that wall, I was ready to create. It went on in about an hour and a half. There was no right. There was no wrong. I love it! The texture was just what it needed. I then sealed it with Kilz to prevent any of the dreaded wallpaper from surfacing.
I selected Lenox Tan to complement the colors in the rest of the main level. It was the perfect background for my red and black accents.

The Bon Appetit picture is from my friend Marshall's. You've got to love that place. The wooden fork and spoon I found at World Market. The drain cover is from Wal-Mart . (I wish that wasn't in the picture, but at this point tonight, I'll just leave it.)

The little red-shaded lamp is a Wal-Mart find and I do love it. Mr. Rooster was on the roost at Gordman's.

I had purchased a tray for my dining table at Marshall's several weeks prior to this. I just HAD to go again to see what new treats I might find, and there it was. A plate that matched my tray for $3.50. There was no way I was leaving without it.

I hope you have enjoyed the saga of my condo kitchen. If you get to the Lake of the Ozarks, stop by, I always have coffee or tea brewing.

Thank you for allowing me to share with all of you.

Charla I must have just missed seeing this before giving up for the night! What a great looking makeover! I love the textured look. Beautiful!! I also love all the accessories.

We're still talking about going to the lake. We have Jim's desk project to drop off this morning. We wanted to do a couple other things and we'd really like to see how the downtown event goes, the 19th. We may run down to the lake for a couple of days, though.

Thank you for the great comment on the guest room post!

What a wonderful solution for that nasty not coming off wallpaper! I love the texture and I'll bet it was even a bit fun! You've made a whole new kitchen and it's beautiful!
Thanks for sharing this tip also!

I so wish that all the builders and remodelers knew that they must still prime the drywall with paint/primer before applying wallpaper! Ugh. I'm so sorry that you had to go through such an ordeal! The finished results look great!

Wow that was some stubbornly attached wallpaper you had on there! I like the solution -- the texture looks lovely, very farmhouse French feel.
And I LOVE your paint color -- Lenox Tan. I have it in our parlor here at That Old House! It's a gorgeous color, and goes beautifully with red.

Great makeover!

Wallpaper can be the undoing of a decorator either going up or coming down. This is a good alternative.

I love the red! I just have a speck of red in my house, more is definitely needed :)

Charla! It looks awesome, girl!! You know me and red - love it! I admire your "tackle the job" attitude. That's kinda not me....I call Chuck!! And after the nightmare of my pulling drywall off in hunks w/the wallpaper as I was trying to help him, I quickly learned that he prefers working by himself! Great idea w/the texture!! So can ya sit back and relax now? Do it!! love you! gina

this is a great change! How lucky your neighbor had the secret and was willing to share, or you might still be pulling postage stamps off the wall!

Great job! I so hear you on the wallpaper removal. It's such a defeating feeling when you want to tear it off in sheets and instead you get shreds and slivers! The kitchen looks fabulous and your drain cover comment cracked me up.
ps- Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Charla--I am so glad you visited and I did not miss your kitchen makeover and wonderful sense of humor! Sometimes wallpaper just has a mind of its own. I just papered over some in my dining room--let the next owner deal with it! I am content with those walls forever :)

Just beautiful! Now I know you are so glad you didnt "jump" and stuck with it. It turned out great!

Charla, What a lovely blog you have. Your kitchen wall color really compliments your red and black accents. There is nothing I love more than seeing kitchen re-makes. Thanks for sharing!

Great Job!! I had the same problem in my last house. The most stubborn wallpaper in my kitchen you have ever seen and like you I tried everything. The wall paper was coming off in little bitty pieces. I finally did exactly what your fiend suggested. I painted over it...whew...what a relief. After that I swore I would never put wallpaper up again. When we moved to our present home, again I spent hours removing old wallpaper. No wallpaper for me. I would rather stencil or paint a scene and then paint over when I get tired of it. Have a super great weekend. ~ Lynn

My friend...your condo kitchen transformation is absolutely awesome!!! Girl, I could feel your frustration as you talked about trying to remove that wall paper! Been there...done that! Eeekss! What a grand solution...just retexture and paint!!! I love the look of the texture...has a tuscany feel to it...it's just beautiful! It made all the difference to your kitchen!!! Love all of your pretty wall art and counter vignettes...beautifully done, my friend!

Warmest wishes,

Hi Charla,
Thank you for visiting my site and your kind comment. I vividly relate to your wallpaper pain! I stripped a few rooms in my lifetime that were stuck like cement and it was certainly time consuming and hard on the manicure. When the walls are not primed correctly this is exactly what happens. I think your updated version turned out wonderful. Your paint selection is sophisticated and warm and inviting against the white cabinets. Cathy

My daughter has a condo and the people before her did the same thing to the walls. We thought it would be hard to paint this in the future but she just painted her kitchen and it was easy to paint over this texture as I guess you already know. It makes the walls interesting. I love your red basket and the plate. I am addicted to Marshalls and Home Goods and Ross for those accents for little money. Thanks for sharing your wallpaper tips. I will be peaking in again.

I HATE removing wall paper, too. After I'd torn off every square inch of that stuff in our old house, I swore I'd NEVER stick a bit of it up again!!! When we built this house 4 yrs ago, I was so sick of every room a different color adventure, that I painted the entire joint the same neutral shade of greenish, goldish, tanish. I still love it after 4 years--that's the test for me. I LOVE your color and the texture fix. Your accessories are perfect--even the lovely drain cover from Walmart!! :) Yes, it is horribly hot in Missouri!! I think we have at least 3 1/2 days of the same ahead of us......keep cool. Dana

Great job on your wall redo. I have been there myself. It was awful. Thanks for sharing your fix.

Your kitchen turned out great! Everytime I've removed wallpaper in this house, it's been awful...they apparently never primed the walls. So I totally sympathize with what you went through. Glad you found a solution that was better than taking it all down...it really is beautiful! Love your new plate, too! Susan

Hi Charla~
I've done this technique many times, and you did a great job with it!
Few things are as much work as removing wallpaper that comes off in tiny pieces.
Your "new" kitchen now is very welcoming.

I love that finish you gave your wall! It looks very Tuscan! Pretty color also. I've had two bathrooms where the wallpaper didn't come off evenly so I feel your pain. But your solution came out so pretty! Good job!
