HIGH LINE PARK , NYC - Outdoor Wednesday

Welcome to Outdoor Wednesday

hosted by Susan at A Southern Daydreamer. Please be sure to check for other great summer scenes.

A couple of weeks ago, two "teacher friends" and I made a quick four day trip to New York to see the sights. Remember, I am retired. They are still in the trenches! My vacation lasts all year long. Sorry, I just needed to express my delight with retirement.

It was a whirlwind of fun and excitement. We were fortunate enough to stay with the daughter and son-in-law of one of my friends. They live in a Brooklyn Brownstone apartment. I loved sitting on the stoop in the morning, sipping my latte, watching the world go by. Staying with them, rather than in a hotel gave us a real sense of the city.

The area is laced with small shops providing all you would ever need. Each evening we ate in one of the local restaurants. The food was fantastic and we did some serious damage.

P and G in our "home away from home". Don't you love those smiles! We have been friends since I started teaching in 1985. Friends like these are true treasures.

Now, on with my Outdoor Wednesday post. Our second day in New York, we visited High Line Park. The Park is located on Manhattan's West Side and it is literally built up over the city. It is in the meatpacking district of New York. Click http://www.thehighline.org/about/high-line-history to learn more. The High Line Railroad was constructed in the 1930's to carry freight and passengers over the city. The first section was just opened before we arrived. When it is complete, it will be one and one-half miles long and have entrance points along the way from the street below.

The view of the surrounding area is wonderful. You can see the busy Hudson River and many businesses in the district.

G on one of the lounges built along the park. It was a beautiful day when we were there and many were visiting. Several artists were busy with pencil and pad. New York had been deluged with rain for several weeks and they were very excited about seeing the sun.

There was a large variety of perennials planted along the walkways. Several volunteers were working in the narrow beds weeding and dead-heading the flowers.

From our walkway above we could view the busy streets of New York as well as this small restaurant.

In another section of the same restaurant there was a seating area and fire pit as well as picnic type tables. It looked so inviting but we were on a mission to see much as possible that day.

The flowers looked as if they had just grown up between the forsaken rails.

How fitting for New York ----

Keep It Wild!

Art work in one section of the High Line, by artist, Spencer Fench, is called The River That Flows Both Ways. The title is from the Native American word for the Hudson River, Muhheakantuck. It is located on a partially enclosed loading dock. The windows are 700 individually crafted panes of glass representing the water conditions on the Hudson River over a single day. He photographed the Hudson River 700 times from the deck of a boat and then matched each image to a pane of glass.

Our trip to High Line Park was one of the highlights of our time there. When communities take the time to re-create from the discards of the past, everyone benefits.

Goodbye New York!
I can't wait to come back.

Thanks for allowing me to share with all of you.
Have a Wonderful Outdoor Wednesday!

Charla

It sounds like you had a wonderful time, Charla. I love the photos.

The brownstones are beautiful. What a great way to have an authentic feel of NYC.

We haven't decided when we'll go home. I'm thinking about asking J to call our friend, to mow the grass. This weather is making us want to stay and stay!

I have never been to New York but I think you guys did it the best way by being part of the daily life.
A latte on the front stoop sounds like the start of a novel.

It looks like your little crew had a really good time in NYC. When things are done with friends they're twice the fun. I love your photos.

Hon, if you managed the trenches as a teacher to retirement, then you deserve to hoot and crow! I sure would. My neighbor Liane retired about two years ago. She just turned 58, and she feels the same way you do. So glad to see you enjoyed your trip in style!

Hi Charla! I loved the trip to NY! I have never been there...well, except for the airport! The first picture looks like a movie set! How fun to sit on the stoop with your morning coffe! No wonder you want to go back! Isn't retirement great? I love it when the school supply displays go up and I don't have to be upset because my summer is almost over! You know, I am a retired teacher too. Retired early ... er young ... whatever. I love being home even though I also loved teaching.

What a great tour! I have never been to NYC but always wanted to go. Your first photo was my favorite actually. It reminds me of "You've Got Mail!" I would enjoy the bustle of the city life and the walks to nearby restaurants and shops.

Thanks for sharing that. And thanks for stopping by today from Kimba's.

Hi Charla, I am so glad you had a good time in NYC. I love when visitors fall in love with "my" city -- your pictures of that Brooklyn street made me nostalgic for our past lives in the city -- stoop sitting with a glass of wine, watching the world go by. I found the small city neighborhoods we lived in to be closer-knit than the suburbs!

My perfect life? A place in NYC, and a little old house in the country. Ah, well... someday!\

Hey Charla..
Thanks for leaving such a sweet wonderful comment on my Tablescape.. I wanted to get back to you about your question regarding the lanterns. Of all the ones we have *tiki torches, candles etc*.. these are the most pleasant ones. The wicks are tiny so you don't have that stringy black smoke like you get from the tiki torches & the larger citronella candles. The little bottles of oil that comes with them aren't refillable.. but you can buy the replacement bottles at walmart for $1.00. They have 2 scents.. regular citronella which is yellow & wintergreen which is clear in color. Neither are strong in odor and are great when grouped or spaced apart for table settings. At the lake I'd probably still use the larger things to create a border guard .. but these would serve perfectly for protecting your seating area and table. Good luck.. and I hope they work as well for you as they do for us.
Hugs,
Debbie

What a fun tour. I've never been to NY and have had so much fun, over the past few months, seeing different tours here in blogland. Isn't it just wonderful to be able to stay with someone instead of staying in a hotel? My DH is from Hawaii, so when we visit we stay with his family and he shows me all the non-tourist spots. Great fun....

Thanks for coming to visit and for your entry into my little giveaway. Good luck!

Blessings,
Spencer

We visited New York one time but only stayed long enough to check out the Empire state building, see "Wicked" and buy a fur trimmed coat at Sack's.

Fun fun fun! Can't wait till I retire and have more time for things like that :)
